Vacation!

Posted By admin on October 10, 2007

Moulding, Trim, Casing, Doors … and a great trip!

For the last week and a half we took a trip up to the Pacific Northwest. It was a first for both of us, so we did a whole road trip from San Francisco > Eugene > Oregon Coast > Portland > Seattle. Lots of cool old Victorians up that way, especially loved our stop in Astoria, OR. Our hotel here was on a pier on the Columbia River - the Astoria Bridge was right out our balcony!

While we were gone, our trim carpenter was hard at work. The plumber and electrician also kicked butt and got a lot done too!

Unexpected Surpises

Front Upper Window Installed!

The window for the master bedroom was installed yesterday. Tony and Charlie first had to cut out the area where the window was to go. Seems like there must have been a window in this spot sometime in the past, because the area was just covered in some plywood and that didn’t seem to be original to the house. When they pulled the plywood off right below the bottom of the window, we discovered this really cool decorative wood carving thing. It’s like a flower with some ribbon flowing around it. We will definitely keep this and restore the small part that got cut into.

Master Tile / French Door

Posted By admin on September 5, 2007

The Master Bath is Tiled and Grouted

Here are some pics of the finished tile. The floor and the shower have been grouted. The shower is still missing it’s seat … which will be a Corian solid surface piece.

The French Door is in!

Finally we no longer have a gaping hole on the front of the house … (sorry neighbors) … the French doors out to the deck are installed. We still need to finish up with some trim, paint and stain, but it’s looking sweet!

Master Bathroom

Tiling the Master Bath Shower

The master shower is turning out AWESOME! We picked a subway shaped porcelain tile, in a travertine-like finish. It comes from the same line as the bathroom floor. We picked a colorful mosaic for an accent too. The mosaic will look richer after the color enhancer sealer is applied.

Hardwood, Granite, Tile

Posted By admin on August 29, 2007

More finish work …

The hardwood floors are pretty much installed. The stairs turned out really great! Now it’s time to stain them and put on several coats of tung oil.

The kitchen cabinets and granite are installed, the guy is there right now installing the backsplash to match the counters.

The master bathroom is under construction, the tile floor has been installed (still waiting for grout). We decided on this diamond/checker pattern. I included a picture of the cabinet/vanity for the master … it’s not installed yet, but we got the idea for the tile floor pattern from this photo!

Chuggin’ Along …

More Paint

We got most of the downstairs painted and this week was time to move upstairs. We are carrying the Navajo White up the stairs and through the upper hallway. The master bedroom color is called Pinedale Shores … it’s a darkish-grayish sage color. Looks nice next to the mahogany of the register mantle thingy. The two spare bedrooms got Bleached Denim (blue) and Castle Path (brownish/tan). All trim will be Palatial White.

Getting There …

Posted By admin on August 2, 2007

Paint

Drywall is done, and we’ve moved on to priming and painting. We should really rent a sprayer, but we don’t have a sink here to wash it out in. We’ve been using rollers and brushes. It kind of sucks, but it’s kind of fun because the floors aren’t in yet so we can be as messy as we want. Mike and I painted most of the downstairs already. We picked a couple of Behr colors: Palatial White for ceilings and trim, Navajo White for most downstairs walls, and Soft Denim for the kitchen/sunroom. Our kitchen cabinets are painted off white-ish, with a brown glaze. I think it’s called Vanilla Bean finish. The cabinets are Merillat, which is the same thing as Kraftmaid at Home Depot. The idea is for the cabinet color to fall in the same family as the Navajo White and Palatial White.

HARDWOOD FLOOR DELIVERY

We painted most of the downstairs to prepare for the flooring delivery today. We ordered the wide plank floors in a heart pine. The widths of the planks vary from 4″ to 8″. Some of the boards are as long as 16 feet! We had to stack the floors a special way, with lathe strips in between all the boards. This helps air circulate through the boards while they acclimate to the house for a week. The floors will be stained a dark red color … which is similar to some wood that was in the house originally. The stain color is called Autumn Leaf, if you look hard at the first photo in the Paint section above (click to view large image) you can see the floor stain sample in the middle at the bottom.
